Autism is considered to be a communication disorder. The communication problem of people with autism is vary defending on the person’s intellectual and social development. Some are unable to speak but others are gifted with rich of vocabularies and can be able to speak many topics as they pleased.
Most people with autism have little or no problem with pronunciation but their problem relies the way the words was used and so was the sentence meaning. People with autism often say meaningless words or repeating words that they heard from a favorite video or words previously heard from other sources.
One of the form of communication disorder was called “ECHOLALIA”, it is a form of disorder where an autistic person would repeat exactly whatever words are said to him instead of answering the question directly. Many autistics individual do not engage on eye contact and either perform gesture as a means of communication.
Some autistic individual may present a very bright personality and can able to speak with confident and in depth with any topic that they are interested, but on other hand they are unable to engage or join any interactive conversation.
Other autistic people communicates with a high pitched of voice and they are common not responsive to the speech of others. Most of the time they ignore other people when they intend to communicate with them and sometimes they don’t respond even others call them through their names. Often there were miss branded that they have hearing problem.
When communication disorder is the main concern, the child’s doctor should usually refer the child to a specialist that would distinguish further and make a comprehensive evaluation about the child’s ability to communicate and then from those evaluations it will come to certain judgement on what approach should be made to administers a certain treatment. The best treatment should begin at an early age as early as during the pre-school years and it should be targeting behavior and also communication as well.
Most of the individual with autism have communication disorder but not all of them. Others have developed their speech into a higher level and unimaginable vocabulary. To some extent they were doing just fine but not really into normal level.
Some people with autism may have accelerated their reading at an early age but knowing what they read about is different thing, in other words they don’t understand it. Comprehension on the topic itself is not normally apply.
